Your phone uses power all day even when you are not actively touching it. A small change—such as an app running in the background or the phone constantly searching for signal—can make the battery seem much worse almost overnight.
1. Check which apps are using the battery
Both iPhone and Android phones include a battery-usage screen in Settings. Look for an app using an unusually large percentage, especially one you have barely used. Updating, restricting background activity or removing a troublesome app can help.
2. Consider the age of the battery
Rechargeable batteries naturally lose capacity as they age. If your phone is a few years old, shuts down at an unexpected percentage, or drops quickly after being unplugged, the battery may be worn. On supported iPhones, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Android wording varies by manufacturer.
3. Watch for heat
Gaming, navigation, video calls, direct sunlight and charging under bedding can make a phone hot and increase power use. Let the device cool naturally in a shaded, ventilated place. Do not put it in a fridge or freezer.
4. Check signal strength and screen settings
A weak mobile signal makes the phone work harder to stay connected. High brightness, always-on display and long screen timeout settings also use more power. If the drain is worse in one location, poor reception may be part of the cause.
5. Think about recent changes
Battery use can temporarily increase after a major software update while the phone completes background tasks. A newly installed app, new email account or changed location setting can also be responsible. Restart the phone and install any available app updates before judging the result over the next day or two.
Stop using the phone if the battery is swollen
If the screen or back cover is lifting, the phone has an unusual chemical smell, or the device becomes dangerously hot, switch it off if safe to do so and keep it away from flammable materials. Do not press the casing closed or puncture the battery. Ask a repair professional for help.
When should you book a battery check?
Consider an assessment when the phone no longer lasts through normal use, turns off unexpectedly, charges erratically or has visible swelling. A technician can check whether the issue is the battery, charging system, software or another component before you commit to a repair.
